Turning a Villa Terrace or Balcony Into Usable Outdoor Living Space

Outdoor living space adds real value to a villa or apartment, but terraces and balconies are among the hardest areas to get right. They are exposed to sun, water and temperature swings every day.

Start with what is underneath

If the terrace sits above living space, waterproofing and drainage come before any finish. A failed membrane under new tiles leaks into the room below, and fixing it means lifting what you just installed. This is why we recommend assessing the existing waterproofing first. Falls and drainage

The surface should slope gently toward drains, so rain and wash water do not pool. Drains and outlets must be accessible for cleaning and sized for heavy rain.

Choose finishes made for outdoors

Tiles and paving for outdoor use should be non-slip, tolerant of heat and suitable for wet conditions. Movement joints are essential on exposed surfaces, because direct sun makes materials expand and contract more than indoors.

Electrical and lighting

Outdoor sockets, lighting and any ceiling fans or heaters need weather-rated fittings and protection. Plan cable routes before finishes go down.

Water and cooking

If you want an outdoor kitchen or a water feature, plan supply and drainage early. Retrofitting pipework into a finished terrace means cutting into it.

Shade, privacy and storage

Joinery for screens, seating and storage should use materials suited to outdoor exposure, and fixings must be corrosion-resistant.

Planters

Built-in planters hold moisture against the structure and must be waterproofed separately, with drainage that does not stain walls or floors.
