Trenching and Underground Services: Planning, Backfill and Reinstatement

Laying a cable, pipe or duct underground is quick. Doing it without damaging existing services or leaving a sunken line across your paving takes planning.

Underground services are out of sight, so they are out of mind, until someone digs through one. Trenching for cables, ducts or pipes is simple in principle, but the mistakes are costly: damaged existing services, trenches that settle and surfaces that never recover.

Know what is already there

Before any digging, locate and mark existing underground services. Review available drawings and use detection equipment where needed. Hitting a live cable or a water main is dangerous as well as expensive.

Plan the route

Choose a route that avoids existing services, tree roots and areas that will be built over. Keep pipes and ducts at appropriate depths and separation, and include spare ducts if more cabling is likely to be needed, because adding one later means digging again.

Keep the trench safe

Deep trenches can collapse. Shoring, barriers and safe access are not optional. Spanex works under ISO 45001 safety management, which applies to excavation as much as to any other activity.

Bedding and warning tape

Pipes and ducts sit on a suitable bed of sand or similar material that protects them from sharp stones and settlement. Warning tape above them alerts anyone who digs there in future.

Backfill in layers

Backfill should be placed and compacted in layers. Loose, tipped backfill is the reason so many trench lines sink after a few months. This is the step most often rushed, and the one most visible later.

Reinstatement

Paving, kerbs and landscaping should be put back to match what was there. Relaying interlock over a properly compacted trench restores the surface, as set out in our guide to sub-base preparation.

Connections and approvals

New electrical, water or drainage connections to network supplies must go through the correct utility approval process. Plan for this early, since it can set the programme.

Record what you built

Photographs and as-built drawings of where services were laid make future work safer and quicker.
